Marine Cpl. Carl Krayauskas, 21, died February 22, 1945, of wounds suffered while fighting on Iwo Jima. He was a graduate of Hall Township High School with the Class of 1941, where he was a member of the varsity football team his senior year. He worked at a CCC camp and at the Green River ordnance plant, which was a large munitions factory located between Dixon and Amboy, before enlisting with the Marines October 2, 1942. Carl served as a Marine paratrooper but was later transferred to the Marine infantry. Before falling at Iwo Jima, he fought on several islands including New Caledonia, Bougainville, and the New Ireland area. At the time of his death, Carl’s brother Algerdis was serving with the Navy.
