EM3 Glenn Vogt, 19, was killed while in action in the Pacific theatre April 29, 1945, when the USS Hazelwood took a direct hit by a Japanese kamikaze plane off Okinawa. The USS Hazelwood was helping to protect a carrier group when kamikazes dove out of the low clouds. She out-maneuvered two but a third, damaged by the Hazelwood’s guns, slammed into the bridge and #2 stack on the port side and exploded. She was set ablaze and the forward guns were put out of commission. Out of a crew of 273, 77 men lost their lives including seaman Glenn Vogt. Those who perished in the attack were buried at sea May 2 as the Hazelwood limped toward an advanced U.S. Navy base. Glenn was Ladd’s fourth fatality during the war. His sister, Elaine, was still a student at Hall at the time of his death.
