Cpl. Willis W. Anderson enlisted in the Marines in 1942. He was a 22 year-old member of the fourth Marine division when he was killed in action in Iwo Jima Feb. 19, 1945. Iwo Jima was Cpl. Anderson’s fourth major engagement in the 12 months that he had been stationed in the South Pacific. The young corporal was one of three brothers serving in the Marine Corps. His older brother was located at Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack, December 7, 1941.
