Pfc. Arnold McElroy, 24, died March 14, 1945, while serving in the signal corps of the Army on Luzon in the Philippines as the result of a skull fracture after a fall in the line of duty. He was inducted into the Army in July 1942, and was trained in signal operations before being shipped to the South Pacific. Capt. Ned E. Ames, who commanded Arnold’s unit in the Philippines, wrote a letter to Arnold’s mother stating that her son was held in the highest regard by all members of his command: “He was a splendid soldier and his character was beyond reproach.” He was buried in the United States Army field cemetery, Manila No. 1 Luzon, Philippines.
